The Siberian Cat

Origin

It is believed that the Siberian cat arose from the crossing of the European cat and the wildcats of the Siberian forests. Since direct human involvement played no role in the development of this breed, it is considered a natural breed. Siberian cats were mentioned in written documents already over 1000 years ago. They were valued for many centuries for hunting mice. Only in the 1970’s did planned breeding begin and in 1987 the first pair was brought to Germany by immigrants.

Appearance

Their appearance is due to the extreme climates of their original habitat, the Siberian part of Russia and the Ukraine, where they are called “Sibirskaya Koschka.”

They feature a strong physique and thanks to their developed muscles, they posses an exceptional ability to bounce. Their moderately long fur is double layered and consists of a water resistent upper layer on the back, flanks and tail. The thick undercoat in the “panty” area and the under belly region protects them from the cold in winter. In the summer, they carry only a delicate undercoat. Their fur rarely mats and usually a weekly brushing or combing is enough. Typical traits are the bushy tail, lynx tipping at the ears and tufts of fur under the paws which act like snow shoes to prevent sinking when walking in snow.

Personality

Siberian cats are described as people-oriented, affectionate, gentle, kind yet lively, spirited, bold and clever.

The distinct social behaviour makes them ideal family cats and they are always up for playing games. One particular thing that they are fond of is water, be it in the bathtub, the sink or coming out of a watering can. Climbing is amongst many Siberian cats a passion. Thus a large scratching post is recommended in the home.

Allergies

Siberian cats contain low levels of the proteins FEL D1 which is the most common allergen in cats. How much of this protein is in the cat’s urine, saliva and glands is dependent on whether or not the cat is neutered and on its gender. The colour of the fur is not an indicator of the level of allergen.

Though many people suffering from cat allergies show no allergic reaction to their own Siberian cat, this is not always the case. People with cat allergies considering the acquisition of a Siberian cat are recommended to visit the cats at the breeders to establish the likelihood of an allergic reaction.
